Armed Robbers Kill Three Policemen
Armed robbers yesterday shot dead three policemen and injured one other in Lagos State.
The robbers were said to be operating on two motorcycles popularly known
as Okada when they spotted a police patrol vehicle on routine duty and
rained bullets on it, killing three policemen and injuring one other.
One of the policemen was said to have fired at one of the robbers, who also died instantly.
It was gathered that the policemen attached to Area C Command, Surulete
in Lagos were deceived by the robbers, who put on caftan, and the
policemen thought they were responsible persons until the hoodlums
opened fire on them.
A police source at Ijora Olopa area, where the incident occurred, said
one fully loaded pump action rifle was recovered at the scene, while
the corpses of the dead robbers and the policemen were taken to the
mortuary.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, who confirmed the
story, said the police were in a patrol vehicle and were shot from
behind by the robbers.
Manko said the robbery suspects who were three on a motorcycle and
dressed in caftan, took advantage of the rainfall and shot the policemen
while on their legitimate duty around Ijora-Olopa. According to him,
the men were five inside the patrol vehicle when the incident occurred.
He confirmed that three policemen were killed and one was injured while
the driver was unhurt.
The commissioner said the policemen were attached to Area ‘C’ Police
Command, Surulere, adding that investigation had commenced as he had
ordered the officer in-charge of the state Anti-Robbery (SARS), Abba
Kyari to fishout the suspected armed robbers.
